Set-up a Site Kiosk

A site kiosk is a tablet set up at a site entrance so workers and visitors can check in (and check out) quickly. You’ll use this when a site needs a consistent, shared check-in point instead of relying on individual phones.

What this means

  • A “site kiosk” is a tablet running the Breadcrumb app in Kiosk Mode for a specific site.
  • A host/admin signs in once, selects the correct site, then leaves the device ready for check-ins.
  • Depending on company and site settings, the kiosk may or may not require the tablet’s location to be enabled to enter Kiosk Mode.

When you’ll use this

  • A site wants a dedicated check-in station at the gate, site office, or induction area.
  • Workers don’t have reliable signal, don’t have the app, or need a faster shared workflow.
  • The site team needs consistent attendance capture from one device.

Key Considerations to Set Up Your Kiosk

1. Confirm access and prerequisites

  • Make sure you have a host/admin login that can access the target site and enter Kiosk Mode.
  • Install the Breadcrumb app on the tablet and sign in.

2. (Recommended) Adjust Kiosk Mode location requirements before you arrive on site

  • If you need to set up the kiosk while not physically at the site, disable the location requirement for Kiosk Mode in company settings (if your account has access).

3. Prepare the site settings (if needed)

  • Confirm the site exists and is correctly named.
  • Confirm Visitor Types are set up in the correct order (commonly: Company Employee, Subcontractor, Visitor).
  • If the site uses visitor-type-based questions (for example, supplier selection), confirm the site/template configuration is correct.

4. Put the tablet into Kiosk Mode in the Breadcrumb app

  • On the tablet, open the Breadcrumb app and sign in as the host/admin.
  • Select the correct site to run the kiosk for.
  • Enter Kiosk Mode and leave the device on the kiosk check-in screen.

5. Lock down the tablet (device-level kiosk lockdown)

  • Use the tablet’s built-in kiosk/single-app mode so it can’t be used for anything else (recommended for live sites).
  • Keep the tablet on charge and ensure the screen stays awake per your device policy.

6. Test the end-to-end check-in flow

  • Do a test check-in at the kiosk to confirm:
    • The correct site is selected
    • The correct visitor types appear
    • Any required fields/forms appear as expected
    • The check-in is recorded in attendance

Common issues

Can’t enter Kiosk Mode unless location is enabled

What to check

  • Whether Kiosk Mode requires device location permissions and/or being inside the site geofence.

What to do

  • Enable location permissions on the tablet and try again on site.
  • If you need remote setup (not at the site), disable the location requirement for Kiosk Mode in company settings and retry.

Wrong site shows up or the site can’t be found

What to check

  • Whether the host/admin account has access to the correct site.
  • Whether the site is public/private and how site visibility is configured.

What to do

  • Confirm the user has the right permissions for that site.
  • Confirm the site is set up correctly in the portal before attempting kiosk setup again.

Workers are prompted to select visitor type or other details every time

What to check

  • Whether the kiosk workflow is configured to require visitor type selection and/or additional questions on check-in.

What to do

  • Review the site/template configuration for visitor-type prompts and required fields.
  • If the workflow needs to be faster, adjust the configuration to remove unnecessary prompts where possible.

Why this matters

  • A correctly set up kiosk reduces gate delays and improves attendance accuracy.
  • It ensures consistent check-in capture even when workers don’t have phones, signal, or the app.
